Islamabad: The Supreme Court has disposed of the defamation petitions of the Election Commission against the PTI leadership.
Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Atta Bandyal heard the defamation case of Election Commission against Imran Khan, Fawad Chaudhry and Asad Umar, in which Election Commission lawyers also appeared in the court.
The lawyer of the Election Commission said in his argument that the Lahore High Court has stayed the disciplinary action against the accused.
ECP counsel argued that Section 10 of the Election Act allows the Election Commission to take defamation proceedings, Imran Khan, Asad Umar and Fawad Chaudhry are not appearing before the Election Commission.
The court said that no High Court has stopped the Election Commission from taking action, the Election Commission has itself stayed the action of defamation Election Commission since October.
The Chief Justice of Pakistan said in his remarks that the Election Commission has the right to take action under the Constitution.
Later, the court disposed of the petitions filed against the PTI leadership in the case of defamation of the Election Commission and said that the action of the defamation of the Election Commission will continue.
The court said that the High Courts should expeditiously decide on PTI’s petitions against the defamation Election Commission, the order against the PTI leadership will be given after completion of the defamation Election Commission proceedings.
It should be noted that the PTI leadership had challenged the Election Commission’s notices and authorizations in the High Courts and the Election Commission had approached the Supreme Court to consolidate the ongoing cases.
